Every day, you have the ability to decide how to design your life. Will you live a life on purpose, or intentionality or will you live a life filled with being unintentional?
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend an art class. Can you remember the last time you painted a “real” picture? Walking into the art studio, it was years since I held a paint brush in my hand.
I saw a blank canvas positioned in front of my painting position, waiting for the artist to create a picture which would fill the canvas.
How to design your life is similar to painting a picture on a blank canvas. When you think about your life, every day you have the ability to be the artist; an individual who decides to pick up the paint brushes and create something on the canvas of life everyday.
How to design your life starts by having the right tools.
Glancing at the unpainted masterpiece in front of me, the instructor informed the class to select the colors needed to create the painting and bring the canvas to life. I quickly went to select the colors I needed for the painting. The instructor had a completed painting of the design and I saw the colors I needed.
Before you decide to paint the picture of your day, stop and access what are you attempting to create. Ask yourself these questions:
- What would success look like today?
- What would I need to do, to ensure I achieved success?
- Do I have the tools necessary to help me accomplish success for today?
Understanding the tools you need is preparing for success.
“Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” – Alexander Graham Bell
Be willing to stop and analyze where you are, to see if you are on track.
How to design your life is reviewing your progress and making adjustments if need.
I felt my painting was coming along well and then I had a ran into a few issues with the design of the waves. I had to retrace my steps and ask the instructor for help in redesigning the waves I created. Allowing time to pause allowed me to get help, which increased my confidence at this point in the painting.
Pausing and asking for help many not feel comfortable, however asking for help increases your competence, which leads to increased confidence.
Up until this point, the instructor was having the class utilize 2 type of brushes. This was fine to me and I could see my picture taking shape, while utilizing another type of brush would allow the finite details to be broadcasted on the canvas.
Utilize different skills to help you design your life by design.
The instructor showed the class how to utilize a different brush stroke to add more variety into the painting. The type of brush stroke, I had never used before, while it added the detail necessary for the painting.
Adding detail to your painting daily may require you to learn new skills. You can do this by reading a good book, listening to a insightful podcast or by attending an online class to help you form the picture you are creating. One such book I found which shows you how to design your life is Designing Your Life – How To Build A Well Lived Joyful Life.
Invest the time to add new skills which will help you along in your journey.
Become a person of action will help you design your life.
By not choosing to pickup the paint brush, you give someone the ability to paint on your canvas and they most likely will not paint the picture you desire.
I could have decided to have not taking action, by not picking up the paint brushes and thus leaving the canvas blank. You have the same choice every day. Stop and access where are you in the process of your painting and be honest where you are. Is your painting what you desire or it is being painted by someone else?
Decide to pickup the paint brush each and every day. The more intentional you are, you influence how your canvas will appear and will lead you to achieve success.
At the end of the class, I realized I did it. I was an artist and you can do the same. Be willing to invest the time required to paint your canvas daily and you will be the artist of your life!
