Limiting; just the word along screams LACK OF! What comes to mind when you hear the word limiting? “Shortage”, “Not enough”, “Missing”, are probably just a few words which come into your mind.
Belief, according to Google is “an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists”. So are limiting beliefs true? It depends on what you tell yourself and if that statement can be supported with evidence.
I enjoy golfing however if I tell myself “I can’t get better at golf”, is that statement true? Well, those who have golfed with me, would probably, well let’s say I have much to bring to the game!
If I said that statement, is it a limiting belief I have about myself? Let’s test it. Has anyone improved their game of golf? Yes! Does this mean I can improve my game? Yes, it tells me that it is possible.
So why do we have limiting beliefs?
Limiting beliefs appear within the mind due to our past experiences. I remember the first time I swung a golf club. Yikes! I don’t believe the balls went in the air. Actually I believe the balls were going sideways. Is that even possible? YES! So what did I do after the horrific experience? I put away the clubs, given I did not want to relive the experience over. My past hunted my future of golf, until I decided to take lessons and receive instructional advice.
Limiting beliefs are the mind’s way to protect you from ___________ . You fill in the blank. It could be fear, failing, displeasure and more. I remember when my daughter was younger, I would tell her not to touch the stove given it was hot. Your mind does that same thing, it sends signals to you and gives you a warning.
Limiting beliefs come about given you are advancing outside of your comfort zone. It appears to say, “Hey YOU! Ya YOU! You haven’t done anything like that! What makes you think you can?” The dialogue you have with yourself will push you forward outside your comfort zone or it will keep you inside and thus, you allow your limiting belief to win.
I remember having an in depth conversation with my limiting belief of not knowing how to write a book. The limiting beliefs came up and I heard “You’ve never done anything like this. What makes you think you can?” Actually at the time, I didn’t know, but I felt I had to try. I had to see if I could and I took the step outside of my comfort zone.
The same can happen for you. Limiting beliefs are the thieves who steal away individual’s dreams and goals. Their mission is simple: Prevent you from advancing, from moving forward and if you asked Mr., Ms., or Mrs. Limiting Belief, they would tell you, they are just trying to protect you.
So if you step outside of your comfort zone, will the limiting beliefs just dissipate? No, I believe they will continue to enter the mind. If my daughter didn’t listen and was approaching the stove and was going to reach out and touch the flame, what type of reaction would I have? I would do my best to get her attention immediately and stop her from touching the flame on the stove.
As you are stepping outside of your comfort zone, just realize your limiting beliefs will raise its voice.
So what can you do to prevent yourself from turning around and heading back to your comfort zone, given the voices of your limiting beliefs?
You put yourself around a group who will support you or get connected with a coach or mentor who will help guide you. There is power which can come from being supported and it will give you the encouragement to continue walking away from the land of comfort.
Are limiting beliefs real? You get to decide. By understanding why they appear, you are the one to test if they are real? I can assure you, if you test them by deciding to receive the encouragement and continue to push ahead, you will find your limiting beliefs were not real.
I love what Brian Tracy said, “You begin to fly when you let go of self-limiting beliefs and allow your mind and aspirations to rise to greater heights.”
Let go of your limiting beliefs and see where you can fly!
